The earlier the intervention the better the strategies will benefit the individual. The research study “Putting a Canadian Face on Learning Disabilities” (PACFOLD) completed in 2005 discovered that the result of poor intervention is often seen with individuals as:
- Failure in school;
- Not achieving high literacy levels;
- More likely to be involved in criminal activities and in the justice system;
- More likely to report overall lower mental health;
- Less likely to succeed at work;
- More likely to be unemployed or earn less.
Early assessment and intervention will reduce the incidences of failure.
If you suspect your child or someone you know has a Learning Disability have him/her tested as soon as possible.
Technology
There are tools available to assist those with Learning Disabilities and the technology is progressing each year. The technology can be in depth such as voice recognition, text to speech, audio text books, computer programs or simple strategies such as organization binders, special pencils, colour overlays.
The key to using technology, is to understand what you need and receive the proper training and support.
