Calgary Board of Education is the largest public board of education in Alberta serving nearly 100,000 students in K-12 education. Established in 1979, Foothills Academy was the first school for learning disabled children in Alberta and one of the first in Canada. Foothills Academy has a dual purpose: 1. To offer a fulltime School Program for students with learning disabilities, and 2. To provide to the greater community, a Community Services component consisting of assistance to professionals and parents as well as research, tutoring inservice, lectures and the publishing of materials relevant to the learning disabled child.

There is a Learning Disabilities Association located in ten provinces and two territories across Canada and from these extend a network of chapters in more than 75 communities across the country.
